Paediatric Spinal Surgery Clinical Research Fellow

Expressions of interest are invited for 12 and 24 month fellowships in Paediatric Spinal Surgery at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

The Spinal Fellow will work with five Spinal Surgeons at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Mr AA Cole, Mr LM Breakwell, Mr A Athanassacopoulos, Mr EJ Bayley and Miss S Srinivas. The post starts in August and has been designed to offer sub-speciality training in paediatric spinal surgery and research. The post is suitable for candidates from early in Speciality Training to post-CCT. Clinically, there is wide exposure to paediatric spinal surgery with the department seeing over 3000 patients in clinic each year and 90-100 all-day theatre lists. The Spinal Fellow will also work with all the paediatric orthopaedic surgeons at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

There will be time to allow the Spinal Fellow to do research to achieve a higher degree and/or publications under the supervision of Mr Ashley Cole. There are well established links with the University of Sheffield and the spinal team at Sheffield Children’s Hospital are currently running an NIHR HTA funded multicentre research study of bracing in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (BASIS study). Mr Cole and Mr Breakwell developed the British Spine Registry which started in 2012 and would provide another area of potential research.
