Rotation Highlights

The North West (Manchester & Lancashire) is a large diverse deanery with a variety of hospitals and trust ranging from Manchester University Hospitals (the largest NHS trust in the UK) to smaller more remote DGH in the Lake District. The trauma service is split between the three major trauma centres at Preston, Manchester and Salford all with capacity to receive Air Ambulance trauma. Our elective hub is based at Wrightington which as the birthplace for hip arthroplasty provides excellent training for senior registrars on the rotation and for post CCT fellows and TIG Fellows across upper and lower limb subspecialty practice. Training in the region has something for everyone - as the UK’s second city trainees can opt to live in Manchester from which the majority of hospitals are easily commutable or bordering on the Peak District, Pennines and Lake District means that outdoor pursuits are accessible too. The STC for the region is proactive and our current TPD ensures a culture of humility and teamwork is instilled from ST3. We have access to an excellent cadaveric lab at the University of Manchester for approach workshops, are actively encouraged to attend national courses and have multiple hospitals in the region that have excellent local teaching programmes to complement the regional teaching. We have an excellent group of trainers that are celebrated each year with out regional TOTY awards. This takes place at our annual ball in November following on from our regions Registrar Research Day. Despite the regions size the number of trainees that undertake CST and stay is testament to the quality and breadth of training available here.
