Pilot Mentoring Scheme for Trainees in Trauma and Orthopaedics

The BOTA Mentoring Scheme is a National initiative for Trauma and Orthopaedic trainees in higher surgical training (ST3+), designed to provide structured and equitable access to high‑quality mentorship outside of the immediate workplace. The scheme offers confidential, one‑to‑one support at key stages of training, including preparation for exams, transitions between new rotations, parental leave, subspecialty choices and fellowship planning. You will be matched with a trained mentor from outside your region and/or subspecialty, who will help you clarify your goals, explore options and identify realistic next steps.

The mentoring relationship is centred on non‑technical and professional development. Rather than providing instruction, mentors facilitate reflection, support problem-solving and help mentees navigate the wider training environment. Mentoring is intended to assist trainees during periods of transition or challenge by encouraging thoughtful discussion and helping to identify constructive approaches to professional development.

As a mentee, you can expect up to three focused meetings (in person or virtual), each lasting up to 90 minutes. A clear mentoring agreement sets out roles and expectations, boundaries and confidentiality. Your mentor will offer a supportive, non‑judgemental space, share their relevant experience and encourage you to think differently about challenges and opportunities. They will not act as your clinical supervisor or manage employment or performance issues.

You are expected to engage actively: come prepared with topics, be open about your goals and follow through on agreed actions between sessions. Your feedback during and after the pilot will directly shape the future development of the BOTA Mentoring Scheme and will support the growth of a sustainable national network of mentors for future generation of trainees.

If you think a mentor may be able to help you, carefully consider all the profiles listed on the website.  It can be tempting to seek someone like you rather than someone who might see the world of work differently. Use this programme as an opportunity to challenge some of your views. The scheme is not designed to provide job opportunities or secure fellowships.

Once you have identified three of our mentors who may be able to work with you and completed your own mentee profile, our coordinator will make the final match and e-connect you.

We look forward to receiving your application and welcoming you to the BOTA Mentoring Scheme.
