Career summary

Graduated from Leeds Uni in 2000 & then took just under 17 years training, with a mixture of full & LTFT in the Yorkshire deanery, with fellowships in Liverpool & Auckland before becoming a Consultant. Initially based in Leeds for 5 year I have now worked In Wakefield for almost 5 years also. Alongside my NHS clinical work I am also a Coach & work with trainees from the Yorkshire deanery which is a real joy & honour. I’ve held national board leadership roles for diversity & inclusion which is a particular passion of mine too.

I’m married to David & we’ve 2 amazing ‘children’ who keep us extremely grounded & the eldest of which will be going to uni this September! I’ve also got 2 dogs that keep me sane & insane in equal measure.

Why do you want to be a mentor and what can you offer a mentee?

Having worked through a period of burnout myself, I am keen to support trainees to either prevent them going through the same experiences if at all possible, or support them through challenging times in & around work. I have balanced training with caring for both elderly relatives & children with specific added extra challenges of neurodiversity & dyslexia.

It really is so powerful to take time out to concentrate on yourself, gain a little perspective & then focus on the next best steps to take without overwhelm, to empower trainees with confidence & a grounded sense of balance for thriving during their surgical careers rather than simply surviving.
