Career summary

​I qualified from the University of Cambridge in 2002, working in East Anglia and then Australia before completing basic surgical training in and around Leeds. I complete higher training in Sheffield and a spine fellowship in Leeds. Alongside my clinical interest in adult spinal surgery, I am associate medical director for education at my trust, overseeing undergraduate and postgraduate education. I am chair of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, and part of the NOTSS faculty at the RCSEd. I am an SAC Liaison member in T&O and also have an interest in leadership development, working as part of the BOA Future Leaders programme faculty and have supervised a number of trainees in leadership fellowships in my own region.

Why do you want to be a mentor and what can you offer a mentee?

​​I have maintained a strong interest in helping trainees develop since becoming a consultant, whether through direct supervision or indirect involvement. I am a great believer in giving back to the profession and helping those coming behind us to be the very best they can. I was awarded the regional and national trainer of the year awards for my extensive contributions in supporting and developing trainees and the opportunity to help those from outside my own training region is of great interest.
