Career summary
Nigel is a retired Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Basingstoke, where he served as Clinical Director and Trauma Lead, and previously worked in the British Army. He is President of the Combined Services Orthopaedic Society and has an extensive track record in trauma systems, global surgery, and surgical education—particularly in low-resource and humanitarian settings.
He contributes to international training and policy through roles with SELF (Surgical Educators Learners Forum), the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s Faculty of Remote, Rural & Humanitarian Healthcare, Oxford University’s Global Surgery Group, the Wessex Global Health Hub, and as an international mentor with the International Orthopaedic Trauma Association. Nigel has held senior leadership and advisory roles across medical indemnity, digital health, and trauma care charities, has addressed the UN General Assembly, and has worked with WHO-linked networks focused on injury care. He helped establish the South Central Trauma Networks in England, co-authored national trauma standards (BOASTs), and reviews clinical research and leading journals.
His honours include an Honorary Visiting Professorship at UT Southwestern (2025) and the Honorary Fellowship of the British Orthopaedic Association (2023).
