Career summary

I qualified from the University of Leeds in 1998, moved to Scarborough for Basic Surgical Training & then to the Northern Deanery for registrar training. I gained my FRCS in trauma & orthopaedics in 2011, went on a year’s fellowship in Newcastle, NSW Australia, returning to take up my current consultant post in 2012. Alongside clinical interests in complex shoulder & elbow trauma, I hold educational posts with the medical schools in both Newcastle & Sunderland & work for the RCSEd as their deputy director for the Foundation Trainee’s Surgical Societies and as a Regional Surgical Ambassador. I am also the current chair of AO UK&I’s Introductory Skills in T&O course.

Why do you want to be a mentor and what can you offer a mentee?

I have benefitted in my career & indeed in my life from good advice & guidance from good mentors & I think that it is a very important part of clinical work. There are many facets of day to day practice in the modern surgeon’s life & I think that the value of talking through a multitude of thought processes to try & make sense of & progress these thoughts successfully is something that can be of real benefit. I have experience of early years training & guidance of younger colleagues, as well as of helping colleagues through FTSS & CTF pathways. I also have an interest in developing & maintaining a good balance between clinical work & outside life.
