Shiv Kolhe
Medical Student Rep
Shiv Kolhe is the BOTA Medical Student Representative for 2019-21. He is a 5th year medical student at Newcastle University, where he is also currently undertaking an intercalated MRes degree.
As BOTA Medical Student Rep, he regularly speaks at BOTA affiliated undergraduate events across the UK, promoting T&O surgery and informing medical students on how they can get involved within the specialty through several BOTA-led initiatives. He is responsible for organising the Medical Student Day at the annual BOTA Educational Congress and ensures all medical students are aware of orthopaedic conferences and events taking place nationwide.
Shiv is passionate about building awareness around the positively changing stereotype within T&O surgery and works with professional organisations such as the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the British Hip Society (BHS) combining efforts to tackle diversity-related issues within orthopaedics. He is currently working on several initiatives that aim to increase exposure to T&O at an undergraduate level, whilst projecting BOTA’s values of inclusivity and diversity to medical students. He believes through effective leadership and increasing medical student engagement with BOTA, we can inspire the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.

Role Responsibilities
The BOTA Medical Student Representative is responsible for representing the views of medical students and provides insight on how BOTA can engage optimally and effectively with undergraduate students. Making and maintaining connections with multiple undergraduate surgical and orthopaedic societies are key responsibilities of the Medical Student Representative; advertising events and ensuring that students nationwide are aware of and are encouraged to interact with BOTA is the primary aim. Having these connections already will be advantageous. Attending undergraduate events such as conferences and workshops to talk about BOTA is also a significant responsibility which requires a certain amount of flexibility on one’s personal timetable.
The Medical Student Representative is responsible for hosting and planning the Medical Student Day at the annual BOTA Educational Congress. Having previous experience of hosting and attending undergraduate and/or postgraduate conferences and workshops is essential.
