Question 1 – Excellent trainers go above and beyond the call of duty. Describe the ways the training offered by this consultant is excellent?

This trainer has dedicated his own time to all; from medical students to ST8.  At 07:30am every Tuesday morning he meets the trainees in theatres to undertake history and clinical examination skills on the patients coming in for theatre that day. In every morning meeting he is actively involved ensuring there is structure and logic in each presentation. He stays late after work to complete research projects and hold regular journal clubs at his home.

Question 2 – Exceptional trainers are inspirational and supportive mentors. Describe ways in which your trainer encourages and supports trainees in their personal and professional development.

As the local surgical training lead in a district general hospital, he has used the funds available to him (as well as persuading the trust for extra funds) to appoint physicians assistants to cover the orthopaedic wards in order that the junior trainees can get experience in clinic and theatre. He sits down to discuss the theatre list each week and helps you write out a pre-op plan for each patient from positioning to closure and dressing with virtually all cases are performed by the trainee.

Question 3 – The excellent trainer has a wider impact on trainees on the rotation, including those who may not be working for him/her. How would your rotation be different without this trainer?

He has inspired, encouraged and motivated our trainees for over 12 years. He has been nominated as trainer of the year for the last 5 years, which is a testimony to his tireless dedication to training, furthering our education and personal development. As well as his national teaching with the AO foundation he encourages others in his department to teach, and has raised the profile of his unit so that it is one of the most sort after training departments that crosses three deaneries.
