Interface Training Oversight Group (ITOG) meeting report

I represented BOTA and trainees at the Interface Training Oversight Group meeting in November 2019.  For those of you who are not aware, the TIG/interface fellowships available to orthopaedic trainees include the hand, major trauma and spinal posts.  These yearlong posts have to started within training and commence at the end of July until 2019, and then from the end of June from 2020. 

Trainee representation was discussed in terms of the number of representatives and defining their specific roles.  Currently as regards the hand interface there are two trainee reps, one orthopaedic and one plastic, who feed back to BOTA and ASiT/PLASTA respectively.  The funding of the TIG posts was discussed, a notable event being the withdrawal of HEE’s funding for posts in devolved nations from the end of 2020.  Currently progress is being made in terms of maintaining funding for these TIG posts.  The quality of posts was discussed and trainee feedback, relating to both the GMC and the JCST survey data.  It was also mentioned that there may be a role for trainee representatives to gather some form of feedback from trainees, which consequently may be more trusted and more valuable.  Problems with NHS HR departments were noted and this may be something that can also be gathered by trainee reps. 

An interesting and possibly controversial area is the way in which the interface fellowships can be integrated within the future direction of travel as sculpted by the Shape of Training.  The process of curriculum rewriting has been going since 2017; this involves moving towards outcome based assessment by capabilities in practice (CiPs) and remains a contentious work in slow progress under the GMC’s control.   As well as feeding this information back to BOTA, I am aiming to work towards improving the ways in which trainees can feedback training or HR issues during their fellowships.
