As the new Publicity Rep for BOTA I attended the Professional Practice Committee at the BOA in August. This committee aims to guide and shape our profession as orthopaedic surgeons. We discussed plans to produce a raft of Elective BOAST guidelines to follow on from the success of the trauma BOAST guidelines which have been invaluable in driving up standards and providing easy trainee audits.
Also discussed were the government plans to revise the current tariff the NHS is paid for all services and operations. Whatever the tariff, clearly clinicians will continue to act in patient’s best interests but it will be harder and harder to balance the books in most trusts.
We also discussed that Getting it Right First Time has been taken up by the government as part of their drive to save money in the NHS through efficiency and quality improvement. I look forward to seeing many of you at the up coming BOA congress in Belfast!
