BOA Patient Liason Group Meeting [05/02/16]

The Patient Liason Group of the BOA was set up in 2004 to involve patient representatives and advocates in BOA policy. They meet three times a year. BOTA have been asked to provide trainee representation for trainees on this committee. At this recent meeting we discussed the perceived acceptability of select patient data (NHS number and DOB) being held on registries including the soon to launch Bone and Joint Infection registry (through Warwick Orthopaedics). We feel this is acceptable.

Further discussion took place around acceptability of the consent process with varied experiences voiced. GIRFT is being implemented currently at local level, and the PLG was especially pleased to hear that one of the GIRFT points is to make NJR individual surgeon data available to the clinical director of each unit. It will mandate a unit discussion on how to take that data forward. We feel this is an extremely positive point for both patients and surgeons.

The next meeting is 17th June which sadly clashes with the BOTA Educational Congress.

There will also be a PLG session at BOA Congress in Belfast in September, which we would encourage all members to attend.
