ASIT/BOTA Statement on Junior Doctor Referendum Results
In light of the result of the referendum regarding the Junior Doctor Contract, The Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT) and the British Orthopaedic Trainees’ Association (BOTA) would like to thank the BMA Junior Doctors’ Committee (JDC) for their exceptional efforts throughout these negotiations and we also reiterate our support for our members and all surgical trainees in these challenging times.
Junior Doctors are united in a desire to negotiate a working contract that is safe for patients, staff and the NHS, and that does not discriminate against valuable groups within our workforce. Whilst the BMA JDC committee felt a viable contract had been agreed, the BMA membership has pressed for further improvements and, as with all referendums, these results cannot be ignored.
We must offer special thanks to outgoing JDC Chair, Dr. Johann Malawana. He has led the Committee during an extremely difficult time and, moreover, has done so with a level of professionalism to which we can all aspire. He has worked tirelessly in this post and endured personal and professional sacrifice in an attempt to find a compromise, acceptable both to junior doctors and the current Government. We are genuinely saddened that he has resigned and wish him all the best moving on in his career.
Looking forward, we are certain that the BMA will continue to act in the best interests of all junior doctors and their patients. We fully support Dr. Ellen McCourt, who will take over from Dr. Malawana as Chair of the JDC, in the goal to achieve a junior doctor contract that is safe for patients, staff and the NHS. ASiT and BOTA would like to express ongoing support for the JDC and the BMA as our trade union, and we wholeheartedly urge our members to continue to support the BMA in these negotiations while they work with the Government towards a settlement.
