Mr Gavin Spence
Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon

Great Ormond Street Hospital, London
Stanmore rotation (NE Thames)

BOTA are pleased to announce the 2018 Trainer of the Year as Mr Gavin Spence. Here are some of the feedback from his trainees:

“Mr Spence is an exceptional trainer with a natural love and aptitude for teaching. He devotes his personal time to prepare trainees for the FRCS through daily informal teaching in the morning meetings and weekly formal teaching for the entire MDT.”

Theatre sessions are always well prepared and foster higher-order thinking. Trainees begin with very little knowledge in paediatric deformity, however Mr Spence’s patience and mentorship helps develop the skills and confidence to perform areas of complex surgery under supervision.”
Mr Spence created a valuable monthly FRCS paediatric teaching day for registrars, which is repeated every 6 months. Mr Spence and invited expert speakers provide small group teaching on their sub-specialist areas. Trainees complete an MCQ paper at the start of their placement which is repeated at the end to review progression. What a star!”
Mr Spence works with humility and a passion for his specialty that is contagious. There is a long list of Stanmore rotation trainees requesting to work with Mr Spence, especially just prior to their FRCS.”
Mr Spence’s local teaching and national courses have a wide impact as trainees prepare for the FRCS and future clinical practice. Despite only a small number of trainees being placed with this trainer his inspirational professionalism and commitment to quality ‘modern’ teaching methods is known and appreciated across the Stanmore training rotation.”
Mr Spence is a shining example of how to facilitate the long-established surgical tradition of learning through apprenticeship. He quite simply inspires and develops the future trainer in us all.”
