This week, I was privileged to attend the Intercollegiate Committee for Basic Surgical Examinations (ICBSE) at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

It was encouraging to learn that following content and question revision the MRCS part A, the reliability of the examination has increased to 0.96 which is the highest ranking amongst post graduate medical exams.

The ICBSE will also be launching a pilot study looking into methods by which a greater depth of feedback may be given to candidates for areas of the examination in which the scored below average. This will assist candidates in identifying and targeting broad content areas that require further focused revision.

BOTA will continue their collaboration with the ISCBE through research channels, looking specifically at factors that influence and predict examination performance and selection into orthopaedics.
